1872 Tin Medal – Death of King Carl XV of Sweden and Norway – by Lea Ahlborn
Obverse:
Laureate bust of King Carl XV facing right. Around: “CARL XV SVERIGES OCH NORGES KONUNG” (“Carl XV, King of Sweden and Norway”). Signed below the truncation: “AHLBORN”.
Reverse:
Seated female figure (possibly Clio, muse of history) inscribing a plaque before a funerary urn or tomb. Above: “FREDSÄLL FOLKKÄR” (“Peaceful and Beloved by the People”).
Historical context:
Struck in 1872 to mark the death of King Carl XV (1826–1872), this medallion pays tribute to his legacy as a popular and peace-loving monarch of Sweden and Norway. The reverse scene, designed by court medallist Lea Ahlborn, symbolises historical remembrance. Though this design exists in higher-quality bronze and silver strikings, this example is in tin — likely produced for wider, affordable public distribution during mourning ceremonies.
