Archebios – AR Drachm, ca. 75–65 BC, Indo-Greek Kingdom – Zeus Type, Bilingual
Obverse: Diademed and draped bust of Archebios to right; Greek legend: “ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΙΚΑΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΗΦΟΡΟΥ ΑΡΧΕΒΙΟΥ” (“of King Archebios the Just and Victorious”).
Reverse: Zeus standing facing, brandishing thunderbolt in right hand and holding scepter in left; Kharoshthi legend around: Maharajasa dhramikasa jayadharasa Arkhebiyasa (“of the Great King Archebios, the Just, the Victory-Bearer”); monogram in lower right field.
Historical Context:
Archebios was one of the final Indo-Greek kings to rule over eastern Gandhara in the first century BC, during a time of great instability and pressure from Indo-Scythian invaders. His coinage follows the established Indo-Greek tradition of bilingual legends and syncretic iconography. The depiction of Zeus as a divine protector wielding a thunderbolt emphasizes both Greek religious authority and military strength. Drachms of Archebios are relatively scarce and highly sought after by collectors of late Indo-Greek issues.
