She was a pioneer of molecular biology in Spain, a great defender of women's rights and an inspiration for generations of female scientists. She has received numerous awards and prizes, including the UNESCO Carlos J. Finlay Prize (1991) and the Santiago Ramón y Cajal National Research Prize (1999). She is an Honorary Doctor from 10 universities. She was elected member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
