Belgium – Silver Medal of the Horticultural and Pomological Exhibition, Ixelles 1887
Obverse:
Central tablet framed by laurel and olive branches, with the legend "COMMUNE D’IXELLES" around and date "1887" below. Decorative border with small rosettes.
Reverse:
Inscription within ornate shield: "EXPOSITION D’HORTICULTURE ET DE POMOLOGIE". The composition includes a cornucopia, scythe, rake, watering can, and other farming and gardening tools, surmounted by a fruit basket and supported by the Belgian royal arms at the base. Signed at lower right: "PAUL FISCH".
Historical context:
This silver award medal was issued by the municipality of Ixelles (a commune of Brussels) to commemorate the 1887 horticultural and pomological exposition. These expositions were significant showcases of botanical, arboricultural and agricultural achievement in 19th-century Belgium. The medal, engraved by Paul Fisch, reflects the rich visual language of such civic awards, emphasizing productivity and local pride.
