Historical context:
This medal commemorates the departure and death of Count Wilhelm Heinrich Baron Scheel-Plessen (1794–1871), a Danish-born diplomat who served Sweden with distinction for over 40 years. Designed by court medallist Lea Ahlborn, it was issued in 1872 in both silver and this more affordable white metal version. The maritime imagery and Latin inscriptions express respect, grief, and admiration in neoclassical form — typical of 19th-century diplomatic medals.
