Macrinus was praetorian prefect under Caracalla. When he believed Caracalla wanted to dispose of him, he hatched a conspiracy to kill the emperor. Caracalla was killed during a campaign against the Parthians. After a few days, the army hailed Macrinus as emperor. A year later, the Severans took revenge and had Macrinus killed. He was succeeded by the Severan Elagabalus.
