German lands, free imperial city of Nuremberg, reckoning token or jeton, sixteenth century, brass.
Obverse: the winged lion of Saint Mark with a halo facing left, its right paw on the book of the Gospels. Comparable pieces show three flowers around the paws, on this specimen they are not visible to the naked eye.
Reverse: an orb with a cross inside a double trilobe.
Legend: on this group the legend is a repeated string of letters rather than a readable sentence, and it varies from piece to piece. Comparable pieces read MENBOVR MENBOVR MENBOV on the obverse and BEON BEON BEON BEON BEON on the reverse. The legend on this piece is a variant of that.
Reckoning tokens were never money. They were used for counting. You laid them on a lined reckoning board or a chequered cloth and moved them from square to square, the way we now use pen and paper or a calculator. Nuremberg was the centre of production for these brass reckoning tokens and they went out by the million to England, France and the Low Countries. The Nuremberg masters began by copying the counters of their European neighbours, and that is where a design like this one comes from. The winged lion with a halo and the Gospel book is the sign of the evangelist Mark and at the same time the emblem of Venice. The orb with a cross on the reverse was one of the standing images on reckoning tokens. Hold a piece like this and you hold a bit of everyday life from a time when a merchant still worked out his accounts by pushing markers around a board.

Cordialement, Vincent
