Roman terracotta loom weight.
Weight is 75 gram.
Dimensions are 65 x 35 mm.
At te base 35 mm and at the top 16 mm.
Loom weights are made of terracotta and most are pyramidical.
Loom weights are normally used in vertical looms, each weight accommodating several warp threads.
The eveness of the web depended in large measure on the equality of weight among the loom weights which held down the warp threads.
Normal weight range to 400 gram.
The warp-weighted vertical loom continued to be used throughout the Roman period and in areas under the control of the Roman east, untill the eleventh century.
Loom weights seem to have been used also in the functioning of the horizontal loom.
This is indeed a very rare and well conserved piece of history.
