This Celtic silver coin was embossed in the 2nd and 1st century BC by Eastern Celts. The template for this coin was a Greek Tetradrachm with Artemis motif. The original was minted in Ancient Macedonia in the city of Amphipolis in the 2nd century BC and was worth 4 Drachms. Like its Greek template, the coin shows an image of the young goddess with bow and quiver on the obverse. Heracles’ club and the inscription “ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΗΣ”, in English “First Meris (District) of Macedonia” can be seen in an oak leaf wreath on the reverse. Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, forests and hills, the moon and archery in Greek mythology. Artemis and her twin brother Apollo were the children of Zeus and his lover, the Titan‘s daughter Leto.
