The Four Evangelists – coin collection from the Vatican
The four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John probably wrote the best-known stories in the New Testament of the Bible. Since the 4th century, they have each been symbolically depicted in the form of a specific winged creature: a man, a lion, a bull and an eagle. This unique set of coins from the Vatican commemorates them. All four coins were issued in 1985 under John Paul II. The obverses feature a portrait of the pope. The reverses show the symbols of the four evangelists.
