This sestertius was issued in Rome under Tiberius as an official honor to Livia in her role as Julia Augusta. The reverse shows a ceremonial carpentum drawn by two mules, accompanied by a dedication from the Senate and People of Rome. This imagery reflects the exceptional privileges granted to Livia during the public supplicationes, emphasizing her elevated status as the matriarch of the Julio‑Claudian dynasty.
The issue forms part of the early imperial propaganda that presented Livia as a stabilizing and authoritative figure after the death of Augustus. Her public cult, formally acknowledged by the Senate, is expressed here with clarity and symbolism. This sestertius stands as a refined and historically meaningful piece, capturing both the political messaging of Tiberius’ reign and the enduring influence of Livia within the imperial household.
