Valentinian I was Roman emperor from 364 to 375 AD, ruling the Western Empire while his brother Valens governed the East. A capable and pragmatic military leader, he focused on strengthening the empire’s frontiers along the Rhine and Danube, repelling invasions by Germanic tribes such as the Alamanni and Quadi. Known for his strict discipline and administrative efficiency, Valentinian also upheld religious tolerance despite being a Nicene Christian. He died suddenly in 375 during a confrontation with the Quadi, reportedly after a burst blood vessel brought on by anger during negotiations.
