Материалы сборника включают, в первую очередь, исследования отдельных произведений и коллекций из эрмитажного собрания - как публикации ранее неизвестных широкому кругу исследователей памятников, так и уточнения традиционных атрибуций, датировок, интерпретаций в свете современной науки. Специальные разделы посвящены наиболее значительным приобретениям музея за последние годы, вновь открывшимся и реконструированным экспозициям, новым исследованиям по истории Эрмитажа; в рубрике Memoria публикуются материалы о жизни и деятельности выдающихся сотрудников музея. Издание выходит на русском и английском языках.

Messages of the State Hermitage - the annual edition, called to acquaint the reader with the newest results scientific, restoration, exposition activity of a museum. Materials of the collection include, first of all, researches of separate products and collections from Hermitage assemblies - as publications before unknown persons to the broad audience of researchers of monuments, and specifications traditional datings, interpretations in a view of a modern science. Special sections are devoted to the most significant purchases of a museum for last years, to again opened and reconstructed expositions, new researches on history of the Hermitage; materials are published in heading Memoria about a life and activity of outstanding employees of a museum.
